Terraces, steps and retaining
Above Wellswood and the Lincombes the gardens drop away sharply, and the usable space is whatever you build. Retaining walls here carry real load, so footings are sized for the ground behind them and drainage is built in so water does not sit and push.
Steps matter as much as the terrace. A flight with consistent risers, generous treads and a handrail where the drop warrants it is what makes a steep Torquay garden something you actually walk down.
What the sea air does
Exposure at Babbacombe, Watcombe and along the seafront is harder on timber and fixings than anything inland. Untreated posts, light-gauge fixings and standard fence panels do not last well up here.
We specify accordingly: heavier posts set deeper, corrosion-resistant fixings, composite where a client wants an end to maintenance, and paving with enough grip to be safe when the wind brings the wet in sideways.

Can you get materials to a hillside property?
Usually with a combination of a small machine and hand barrowing. We look at access on the site visit and include the real labour in the fixed price rather than discovering it later.
