Teignbridge covers an unusually wide spread of property in a small area. Heavy clay and poor drainage
Much of the lower Teign valley sits on clay that holds water. Paving laid without adequate falls and a free-draining sub-base sinks and greens up within a few winters here.
Made ground behind older properties
Victorian terraces in Newton Abbot and Teignmouth often have decades of made ground behind them. Excavation depth has to respond to what's actually there, not to a standard figure.
Steep valley sides
Teignmouth, Dawlish and the Dartmoor fringe villages produce gardens on real slopes, where terracing and retaining walls are the only honest way to gain usable space.
Compacted new-build subsoil

How the job runs

Site visit in Teignbridge
Phil comes out to the property, measures the work, checks levels, ground conditions, drainage and access, and talks through what you want the garden to do. Site visits across Teignbridge are arranged between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
- Step 2
Fixed price and programme
You get one fixed price, calculated from the measured area and the labour the work genuinely needs, plus a realistic start window. An hourly rate only ever applies to unforeseen additional work, and we raise it with you at the time rather than at the end.
- Step 3
Groundwork, levels and drainage
Excavation, sub-bases, footings and water routing happen first. Getting these right is what decides whether the finished work is still level and dry in ten years.
- Step 4
Build and finish
Walls, paving, carpentry, structures and planting are built in a sequence that avoids disturbing completed work. The site is cleared at the end of each day.
- Step 5
Handover
We walk the finished work with you and explain any aftercare. If anything needs attention afterwards, Phil is the person who answers the phone.

How Teignbridge ground affects the build
Ground conditions vary sharply over short distances here. The valley floor around Newton Abbot is heavy and water-retentive; the Dartmoor fringe around Bovey Tracey and Ashburton brings shillet and rock closer to the surface; the coastal strip adds salt and wind exposure.
That's why we don't quote from a photo. Excavation depth, sub-base thickness, footing depth and where surface water can safely discharge are all decided after looking at your particular plot, and are the difference between paving that lasts and paving that moves.
Access matters as much as ground. Whether a machine can get in, or whether everything is barrowed through a terrace, changes the programme and the price, so it's assessed before we quote rather than discovered on day one.

Do you charge extra to travel within Teignbridge?
Teignbridge is our home patch and we quote one fixed price for the work. Phil will confirm the figure at the site visit, what you're quoted is what you pay unless genuinely unforeseen work appears.
Do you offer an emergency or weekend callout in Teignbridge?
We work 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and don't operate a weekend or emergency callout service. If something like storm-damaged fencing needs attention, ring Phil and he'll tell you honestly when we can get to it.
Are you insured to work on my property?
Yes: £2 million public liability cover. The two tradesmen working alongside Phil are self-employed and their work is covered under that same liability insurance.
Can you work on a sloping garden in Bovey Tracey or Teignmouth?
Yes. Sloping plots are normal here, and terracing with retaining walls, steps and decking is one of the things we do most, it's how you turn an unusable bank into flat garden.
Do you build garden rooms in Teignbridge?
Yes, and demand around Newton Abbot has grown with home working. Rooms are typically designed within permitted development, with building regulations always adhered to and electrics and plumbing subcontracted to qualified trades.
What deposit do you take?
On larger projects there's sometimes an initial deposit of around 10%. In all cases 50% is due once the job has started, with the balance on completion.
