Stone, slope and older properties
A good share of Bovey Tracey property is older stone and cob, and the paving needs to sit with it rather than shout over it. Sandstone, weathered granite setts and riven finishes generally suit these plots better than a bright modern porcelain, though porcelain works well behind the newer houses off Battle Road.
Above the town the plots run uphill fast. Terracing with a properly founded retaining wall, drained behind, is the only honest way to get a flat, usable area out of that sort of bank.
Water off the moor
Rainfall here is heavier than down in the Teign valley and the ground upslope sheds water onto gardens below. We build in channel drains, soakaways and deliberate run-off routes as part of the groundwork rather than adding them when a patio starts flooding.
Timber takes a harder life at this elevation too, so fence posts, decking substructure and garden-room cladding are specified with the damp in mind.

Yes. Hennock, Lustleigh, Chudleigh Knighton and the lanes towards Heathfield are all normal working distance for us from Denbury.
Can you build a patio on a steep plot?
That is most of what we do here. It becomes a retaining and drainage job first, then a paving job, and the wall footing is what decides whether it stays put.
Will granite or sandstone suit a cob property?
Usually. Riven natural stone with a wider, softer joint tends to look right against old stone and cob, and Phil will bring samples to the site visit so you can see them against your own walls.
