Two kinds of garden, one mile apart
Around Church Road the plots are older, with mature planting, established trees and boundary walls that have been there a long time. The work there is usually restoration: relaying a tired path, rebuilding a wall, opening up a garden that has closed in.
Towards Matford and the newer estates it is the opposite: blank plots, compacted ground and no structure at all. Those want a scheme, not a patch, and they are a good candidate for a full design-and-build in one go.
Trees, roots and what you can build near them
Mature gardens near the Alphin Brook often have significant trees, and paving laid over roots without thought lifts within a few years. Where roots are in the way we adjust the build rather than cut through what is holding the tree up.
It occasionally means a different surface, a slightly different position or a raised detail. Phil will explain the trade-off on site instead of laying something that will fail.
