Designing around the view
On the slopes above the estuary the best part of the garden is often the least usable part of it. Getting a level terrace or a deck to the right spot, with safe steps up to it, is what turns a view you glance at into somewhere you sit.
Balustrade, handrails and lighting get the same attention as the paving, because on a sloping plot they are what make it usable after dark and safe all year.
Exposure, and larger rural plots
Closer to the water and out on the Salcombe road, salt and wind are a genuine factor in choosing timber, fixings and planting. We specify for it rather than hoping.
Away from the town the plots get bigger: paddock edges, long boundaries and full garden schemes where the design has to hold together across a lot more ground. Those are built in a sequence so the finished areas are not disturbed by the next stage.
