Working behind old stone
Many Ashburton gardens are held together by old dry stone or lime-bedded boundary walls that have moved over a century or more. Building against them needs care: excavate carelessly at the base of an old wall and you take the wall with you.
Where a wall has bellied or dropped we rebuild in matching stone rather than replacing it with block, and where a new retaining wall is needed the footing and the drainage behind it are what actually keep the ground where it belongs.
Access, and getting materials in
The town streets are tight and parking is limited, so deliveries and muck away are planned around the day rather than left to chance. On the lanes towards Buckland and Holne the opposite problem appears: plenty of room, but a long carry and a soft verge.
Either way, access is one of the first things Phil looks at on the site visit, because it changes the labour and therefore the price.
